Body Parts in Japanese

Body Parts in japanese is organised in much the same way as English, in that for most body parts in English there is a Japanese equivalent word. For example, head is ‘atama’ and mouth is ‘kuchi’. So in that respect, learning the Body Parts in japanese is quite easy for the English speaker, with a few exceptions. For instance, ‘te’ can refer to the entire arm including the hand and elbow, or ‘ashi’ could refer to the whole leg, knee and foot. There are words for these parts in Japanese, but they are often left out of conversation for simplicity’s sake.English can get quite confusing like that for learners of English.

Body Parts Song

There is a wonderful song called ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes in English that I use to teach my Japanese students as the Japanese words fit quite nicely within it’s rhythm, and it’s nicely put together by GenkiJapan below. This song covers the simple body parts needed to sing the song, so atama, kata, hiza, ashi, me, mimi, hana, kuchi.

Of course there are far more body parts that are covered in this short dong, so below are some images and a list of more advanced body parts for the Japanese learner.
